“STEP OUTDOORS…where health meets adventure!,” is a call-to-action campaign designed to encourage awareness, utilization, and appreciation of the outdoor resources, facilities, and programs in and around Tioga County, for the purpose of getting people rooted in healthy behaviors. Through the active enjoyment and appreciation of our natural environment, we can improve the health of both ourselves and our communities.

The origin of Step Outdoors is found in a chronic disease prevention approach called Steps to a Healthier US (local initiative: Steps to a Healthier PA, Tioga County). This prevention model seeks to encourage healthy behaviors, such as daily physical activity and good nutritional practices. Steps to a Healthier PA began working with outdoor partners (i.e. Wellsboro Department of Parks and Recreation, DCNR – Pennsylvania State Parks, and US Army Corps of Engineers) to encourage use of public outdoor recreational facilities as a means to a more active lifestyle for the whole family, resulting in the “birth” of “Step Outdoors…where health meets adventure!”.

Saturday, with the forecast in the 50’s, while we planned on skiing and snowshoeing at Mill Cove, we will instead have a 9am XC Ski, snowshoe, and hiking traction DISPLAY and short talk for those interested in purchasing equipment. You can also bring your equipment for advice on upgrading or any other questions you may have.

At 10am, we’ll take a relatively easy, out and back one or two-mile loop hike, led by Daryl Warren. All ages and abilities are welcome!

Meet at the large pavilion (go past construction equipment near the entrance). Hikers may be advised to wear brighter clothing since it is the last day of small game and the hike will be in areas open to hunting.

Directions to Mill Cove from Mansfield:
The Mill Cove Environmental Area can be accessed by traveling to North Main Street in Mansfield, turning onto Decker Street and proceeding over Pickle Hill for a distance of approximately 5 miles to the Mill Creek Road. Turn left on Mill Creek and continue west to the end, preceding though the gate. The Mill Cove Pavilion is on the right approximately a ¼ mile from the gate.
